Getting a Tibet Travel Permit

This post only covers only on the journey from any part of China to Tibet. Hence, if you are planning to travel to Tibet from Nepal, you can skip this post.

Before discussing further into the topic, It is crucial to know some information about travelling to Tibet.

Tibet Travel regulation

Independent travel is prohibited for foreign tourist in Tibet. All international tours have to be a guided tour with a professional tour guide, private vehicle and Tibet travel permit.

Tibet Travel Permit

Tibet travel permit is an additional travel document that every foreign tourist needs to travel to Tibet.

Though it is commonly called Tibet Visa, it is not a visa that the Chinese Embassies issue.

It is issued in Lhasa by the Tibet tourism bureau. Your local Tibetan travel agency in Lhasa has to apply it on your behalf.

Applying for Permit

We need a copy of your valid passport and Chinese visa to apply for the permit.

For those coming to Tibet from Nepal, you will have to send us only a passport copy as you will have to get the Chinese group Visa from the embassy in Kathmandu.

The permit application process takes about 15 to 25 days, depending on your trip’s places and tour duration in Tibet.

Tibet permit will be available only on the eve of your arrival in Lhasa. Hence it is crucial to make sure you have it before your last part of Tibet’s journey.

Hotel Delivery of your Permit in Cities in China

Those who intend to fly to Lhasa from other cities in China or take the train from Chongqing to Lhasa will have to get the Original Permit in hand before that last part of the journey.

Hence the only option to get a Tibet travel permit is to send it to your hotel in other China cities or Chongqing for the train journey to Tibet.

You will have to send us your hotel details, including the address in both Mandarin and English, their phone number and your booking number.

Additionally, it is highly recommended that you tell them that you expect a parcel from Lhasa and get the permit while checking in.

Airport delivery of permit.

If you don’t want to stay in a hotel for a night, we can arrange for someone to deliver it to the Chengdu airport.

At the airport in Chengdu, You will meet our agent as you arrive, and she will hand over the permit.

The airport delivery will cost you an extra 50 USD for the logistic fee of the delivery person.

You will have to provide us with your flight details from your home to Lhasa. Contact number and messaging App (preferably Wechat).

Permit delivery for those taking a train journey to Lhasa

Finally, for those how are taking the train to Lhasa. You don’t need the original copy of the permit with you while boarding the train or at the ticket counter.

So we will send a copy of your permit by email. It is recommended to make sure your email works in China. Yahoo and Outlook work perfectly in China.

You can make a print out the permit and bring the printed copy to the train station.
